Analyst Next iPhone iPad Mini to Launch in September

While most rumors indicate that Apple will unveil the next iPhone in October, an analyst today said the highly anticipated smartphone could make its debut a month earlier.

"Looking forward to an exciting September from Apple," analyst Brian White with Topeka Capital Markets, wrote in a note to clients Monday following a round of meeting with his contacts in Taipei. "Regarding the widely anticipated iPhone 5, we believe a September launch is more likely than October."

Even better — the Cupertino tech giant will launch its sixth-generation iPhone alongside the much talked-about "iPad mini," White predicted. Recent rumors indicate that the scaled-down iPad will measure in at 7 inches, and be priced competitively at around $200 to $250.

On the next-gen iPhone front, White said he "gathered more data points" supporting hisearlier prediction that the coveted device will have a unibody frame, which he believes will be manufactured by Hon Hai Precision, and another company. However, he put into question rumors that the body of the next iPhone will made of a super-tough alloy called Liquidmetal.

"Our contact was skeptical around the plethora of news stories highlighting Liquidmetal Technologies potential involvement in the iPhone 5," White wrote.

Meanwhile, some have speculated that Apple could unveil the next iPhone as early as next week at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco. But dont get your hopes up. Apple didnt unveil the iPhone 4S until last October, and most rumors claim the tech giant is planning to keep a similar timeframe for the launch of its next iPhone.

The next-gen iPhone is largely expected to sport a larger, 4-inch screen. Other persistent rumors indicate that the phone will be about 20 percent thinner than its predecessor, with a metal backside, and smaller dock connector.

As for what Apple has up its sleeve for WWDC, rumors point to a revamped iCloud,Facebook integration with iOS 6, and a 3D mapping solution, among other things. PCMag will be at WWDC, which kicks off June 11, so stay tuned for all the details.

Google+ has long been the best nerd-filled social network your mom hasn’t caught onto yet. On Friday, it got even better.

The Mountain View company has rolled 24 new features into the Google+ experience, and all of these new additions are now available in for iOS, Android and web users. On top of that, Google has redesigned its social network’s iPhone app, too.

Our first assessment of the big push: wherever you use it (if you’re one of the 135 million on the service), Google+ has improved.

The new iPhone app (version 4.0 if you’re keeping score) moves the look and feel of G+ stylistically closer to Google’s other iOS apps — the fantastic Google+ for iPad, Google Maps for iPhone, Gmail for iPhone and the Google Search iPhone app. Previously, Google+ on the iPhone had a look all its own, using a lot of black and dark gray across the interface, with a great deal of real estate given to photos. It was beautiful, and it made me wish more people used Google+, because that would make it more exciting to interact with. Alas, most of my friends — like 800 million other humans on the web — are turning to Facebook over Google+ to share and network with the world. And while that likely won’t change anytime too soon, the iPhone redesign greatly rewards those who do use G+.

The new look is airy with lots of white space, and it brings a level of personality and charm not many social networking apps (outside of Path) can match.

The use of dark regions is now confined to a black bar across the bottom of the default view — this bar is where the stream of incoming posts from your Circles shows up. The bar disappears as you’re scrolling through your stream, only to return when you’re not scrolling — which is when you’d actually want to use it. In the bar are four buttons: share a photo, check into a location, share a link from the web, or type a post. Each of the four buttons uses one of the four colors from Google’s logo — blue for photos, red for check-ins, yellow for links and green for written words. Gone is the black background, which has been replaced by a light gray color. Posts show up on white cards reminiscent of Android’s Google Now cards. Speaking of Android, the Google+ Android app remains the same for the most part, but it now also has this re-appearing black bar on its stream view.

Like the old app, you can choose which of your circles shows up in the stream view by tapping on a button at the top of the app. And, like the old app, refreshing your stream is done by the familiar pull-to-refresh action. Tug downwards on your stream and four bars show up above the most recent post, thinning as you stretch them. Let go and the text changes to “loading,” and the bars blink one at a time until the loading completes. It’s a nice embellishment.

We’ve had a look at this case as it resided on the iPhone 4/4S, now it’s time to see how well the Loop team made the concept fit with the iPhone 5. This case is made not just for Halloween, but for all seasons in which you want to get fashionable with silicone on your iPhone – and with a few card-holding bandages to boot.

This case comes in an appealingly large amount of different colors, the one we’re having a peek at this week being the Neon Blue. You can also get this case in Black, Graphite, Magenta, Purple, Powder Blue, Orange, Neon Green, Red, and White. The folks at Loop also offer up both single cases and bundles of three, with a discount occurring to the tune of $15 for three – that’s $60 USD where otherwise you’d pay $25 for one.

They’ve got custom packs (choose your own three) or pre-made packs including Aqua Thunder, Chicago, El Diablo, Good n Plenty, Greyscale, The Hulk, and Urban Camo – see if you can guess which set of three creates each of those bundles. The design for this case improves over the Mummy we inspected for the iPhone 4/4S as well, with slightly more perfected sizings on the holes for the mute / display lock switch and moving forward with the Lightning port at the bottom of the device with a bit more form-fitting an amount of silicone to keep the case tight.

The usability of the case as a card holder is still ever-so-questionable. Not because it doesn’t work – it certainly does hold a few cards if you want it to, securely, too. Instead it’s not a realistic sort of situation for any modern card-holding citizen. Where there’s one, there’s 20 – and I can’t fit 20 in this case, that’s for certain. If on the other hand you’re a minimalist and want to skip the wallet because you’ve got only digital money and a driver’s license, this case/card holder is the one for you!
