Kobo glo tablet

Posted by Unknown Friday, September 13, 2013 0 comments
Announced earlier in the year, Kobo’s range of Kindle competing products has hit retail, not only offering the eBook space some new gadgets, but also giving Google’s Nexus 7 some friendly competition.
Kobo showed its hand in September shortly before – one day, in fact – Amazon showed its own slate of new products. Unlike Amazon, though, most of Kobo’s gear was coming to Australia.
And now, it’s here, with the Kobo Mini, Glow, and Arc hitting retail this week, just in time for the holiday season.
Kobo Glo
“We are excited to bring these new eReaders to our Australian customers,” said Kobo’s Director of Vendor Relations for the Asia Pacific region, Malcolm Neil.
“Kobo at its core is a company of booklovers and the Arc tablet as well as the Glo and Mini eReaders were designed with booklovers in mind. The result is three sleek, lightweight devices that are easy to use and comfortable to hold, giving consumers choice.”
The prices range from $99 to $349, with the lowest of these ($99) grabbing you the Kobo Mini, a 5 inch no-glare electronic ink reader with 2GB storage for support of up to 1,000 books.

Next up is the Glo (above), an eReader with a 6 inch e-ink 1024×758 screen with front-lighting, making it possible – and more importantly, comfortable – to read your books where ever you are, day or night.
The Glo features a touchscreen, WiFi, and the same 2GB of internal memory supporting up to 1,000 books, but also features microSD expansion, allowing you to add up to 32GB more memory in case you’re an avid reader.
Kobo’s Glo starts comes in at $160RRP, but there’s also a tablet version out, offering Google’s Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich” in a 7 inch form-factor.

Available from $250 RRP, the Arc (pictured above) comes pre-loaded with Quickflix and features tech we’ve seen across other Android tablets, including a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, storage between 16 and 64GB, WiFi, Bluetooth, and according to Kobo can survive a drop of 1.5 metres.
All three should be available in stores across Australia this week, a little late from the expected October release date.

Amplify Tablet is an Android machine custom built for education

Posted by Unknown Thursday, April 11, 2013 0 comments
News Corp rebranded its educational unit as Amplify in July. Since then the Joel Klein-headed company has been working with AT&T to develop a tablet expressly designed for the K-12 educational market. After months of testing the Amplify Tablet, an unspecified 10-inch Android slate loaded with custom software, is ready for its official debut. Lots of things have changed since we first caught a glimpse of the project many months ago. For one, the UI has been completely redesigned to be clean, modern and simple. The new look is much more inline with Googles Holo, with extensive use of action overflow buttons, the sharing menu and solid blocks of color-coded material. The default home page offers a grid of app icons, but it also displays student information and lists "notebooks" on the right hands side. Those notebooks deliver quick access to different subjects for students, but they also give teachers direct links to materials for their classes, categorized not just by subject, but also by period. Klein and company dont stop at simple organizational tools and reference materials, however.
Amplify aims to be not just a tool but a platform for managing a 21st century classroom. Where past efforts to incorporate tablets into a K-12 environment have been satisfied with simple (and carefully controlled) social features and some reference materials, this actually offers features to teachers aimed at delivering instant feedback and differentiated instruction. Everything from taking attendance and blocking distracting apps, to polling students comprehension and pushing supplemental materials to those that need it can be managed from the educators unit. Theres also the ability to build custom lesson plans called Playlists, that can incorporate material from locally stored textbooks, pre-loaded Khan Academy videos and the internet.
The biggest stumbling block continues to be price. A WiFi-only Amplify Tablet will set schools back $299 apiece, so long as you agree to a two-year subscription to Amplifys services at $99 a year. (Its nice to see Klein has learned something from working closely with the carriers.) Prices climb even higher if schools wish to have LTE connectivity; an Amplify Tablet Plus will put a $349 dent in a schools budget and thats before factoring in the two-year mandatory subscription which includes AT&T service for $179 a year. Still, theres plenty of solid ideas at work here that we could see enjoying great success if theyre incorporated into a more affordable product. New BlackBerry BB10 tablet on the way

Posted by Unknown Saturday, April 6, 2013 0 comments
We’ve already seen the BlackBerry Z10, the first handset to come with the new BlackBerry 10 software, and it looks as if we’ll be seeing the operating system on a larger-screen device soon.
According to Know Your Mobile India, a BlackBerry executive has outed the new hardware, stating that a new BB10 tablet will “definately” be coming this year.
But what about the poor old BlackBerry PlayBook, the company’s stab at taking on the iPad? That will be getting BB10 too, but we’d imagine that for the full experience, you’re going to have to pony up for this new tablet instead.
Do you think there’s room for a new BlackBerry tablet, what with the iPad and Nexus 7 dominating the sector at present? Or do you think a bit of healthy competition is needed to shake things up a little? Leave a comment below to let us know your opinion on the matter.
